Congratulations!

Being engaged is such an exciting part of life :). I was just there a year ago! When you're engaged there's so much anticipation for the future and thrill in the moment at each wedding planning milestone. One of my favorite milestones was getting engagement photos done! I think these sessions are so fun and capture the joy couple's have leading up to their wedding so well. If you're engaged and looking for help prepping for your session, this post is for you! What should you wear? Where should you have the photos taken? How do you even know what kind of photos you want? Keep reading to find out!

Location

The first and most important decision regarding your session is where it will be held. All the following decisions will be based this. Picking a location comes down to where you as a couple like to be! The goal is to find somewhere that emphasizes what your relationship is like. Do you have a special spot you always go to? Have a favorite activity like hiking or going to an arcade? Pick a location based on what fits your relationship or what's special to you guys. My now husband and I had our engagement photos done back home in Vermont in the winter. We're both from there, we fell in love there, and Vermont is famous for it's winters!

You could also pick based on a special moment in your history together! Joel and Sierra did their session in the town where they met and got to know each other! We walked around town stopping at cool backdrops and the whole time they got to reminisce about the day they met!

If you're still stuck for a location you can always ask your photographer! More than likely they have a few spots in mind that they love shooting at. A few of my current favorites are in parks near where I live! In college my favorite location was a hiking trail by the Schuylkill River. I did a couple engagement sessions there and both couples loved the outcome!

Outfit

The next best question is what should you wear? This one is really based on the location. For example, you wouldn't want to wear beach clothes in the snow! The process for finding the right outfit is similar to finding the right location. Choose first based on where you're going, then based on your personalities. Not a dress person? Where pants. Definitely a dress person? Go for it! You'll want to wear something you feel confident in! That'll help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera and further show who you are together in the photos.

It's also helpful for the photos to match at least in color theme. If you guys match outfits often this will be easy for you! Pick something you're confident in and match the shoot vibe. If you're not a huge matching t-shirts person (raising my hand here), pick a couple colors that work well together and match the theme of the shoot. This will help the photos look more cohesive and make you two look

more connected!

You're also not limited to one outfit! If your session is long enough and it's included in your package, feel free to switch it up! Carlos and Sarah (above pictures) brought two outfits which allowed for two different vibes in the same session!

Style

In part, the style of your photos is up to the photographer. Each photographer has their own style that their work follows. So when you pick a photographer make sure you like their work! If you want darker, dramatic images probably don't go with a photographer who shoots exclusively light and airy. That said, as the client you do pick the theme for your shoot. Are you looking for more of a fun loving vibe or serious and artistic? Do you want to show the love in your relationship or the way you joke around together? These kinds of questions help you both find a photographer and help the photographer to match your vision for the photos.

A phenomenal tool that I recommend for all my couples is Pinterest! You probably already have a Pinterest board for your wedding so why not one for your engagement session? Look for photos that you love the style of. Also look for photos you the love the poses in! Your photographer will know how to pose you together and in the environment but coming with ideas is always helpful!

The bottom line in all of this is to base your session around the personality of your relationship. Your photos should capture the excitement and character of this stage in your lives together! When you're choosing a photographer make sure you communicate your vision for the images. We're here to make sure you walk away with beautiful memories in photo form. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask!
